I
guess my
love for music is in my blood.
Both of my Grandfathers played fiddles. My Grandfather Powers, although I never met him, made fiddles. I was told he made thirteen and gave them away. My Papaw Carter met my Dad playing music and eventually introduced him to my Mom. Our house was used for practice a lot. My Dad has six brothers who played mostly guitar, although they tried anything with strings. When we lived in Adrian, MI, my Dad worked at Harvey Aluminum. They had some kind of contest at work and he made an aluminum mandolin and won.
When I was about ten, Dad started teaching me and my sisters, Diane and Marie to sing harmony. I really didn't like it much. He got mad a lot, but I think we did alright. We never went on the road - he just wanted us to know how to harmonize. About that same time he began teaching me how to play the guitar. I don't know why, but I'm the only one of six brothers and sisters that plays. Although I never really played for many years, I always had a guitar. Janine and I began playing together when I worked at The Chucky Trading Company Restaurant in 1982. We learned some songs and did some shows there. Then David started with us and Randy followed. We've been together ever since. |
